Allergy is a disorder of the immune system often also referred to as atopy. Allergic reactions occur to normally harmless environmental substances known as allergens; these reactions are acquired, predictable, and rapid. Strictly, allergy is one of four forms of hypersensitivity and is called type I (or immediate) hypersensitivity. It is characterized by excessive activation of certain white blood cells called mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE, resulting in an extreme inflammatory response. Common allergic reactions include eczema, hives, hay fever, asthma, food allergies, and reactions to the venom of stinging insects such as wasps and bees.

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to foreign substances, such as pollen, pet dander, certain foods, or insect stings. Symptoms can range from mild, such as sneezing and itching, to severe reactions like swelling and difficulty breathing. Allergy medications are designed to manage these symptoms and improve the quality of life for those affected.

Common treatments include antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, and specialized medications for more severe reactions like anaphylaxis. These medications work by either blocking the release of histamines, reducing inflammation, or modulating the immune response. Depending on the type and severity of the allergy, patients may use oral tablets, nasal sprays, eye drops, or topical creams to alleviate their symptoms effectively.

Managing allergies involves not only the use of medications but also identifying and avoiding triggers whenever possible. Regular consultations with healthcare providers can help tailor treatment plans to individual needs, ensuring better control over symptoms and a higher quality of life. Advances in allergy management continue to provide more effective solutions for both seasonal and chronic allergic conditions.
